Goals & Objectives
Objectives: - To investigate and evaluate socio-technical, organizational, social, ethical, and individual behavioural issues surrounding the introduction and use of informatics applications. - To determine strategies for systems and workflow analysis, product design and implementation, and technological and organizational change to support health care delivery through information and communication technologies. - To incorporate organizational change management and human concerns into information technology projects.
Recent Activities: MEDICAL INFORMATICS CONFERENCE ACTIVITIES - Co-sponsored and participated with the AMIA People and Organizational Issues WG a Doctoral Consortium to precede the AMIA Symposia. - Co-sponsored and presented a workshop on "Avoiding The F-Word: IT Project Morbidity, Mortality, and Immortality," at the AMIA 2006 Symposium, together with nine AMIA WGs - Participated in keynote panel on "evaluation" at AMIA Spring 2006 Congress. - Co-sponsored two panels for Medinfo 2007: - Hsiung, R.C., Kufkafka, R., Kaplan, B., and Courtney, K.L.,"Unintended Consequences of Consumer Health Informatics Innovations - together with AMIA WG on Ethical, Legal, & Social Issues - Talmon, T., Elkin, P., Reddy, M., and Kaplan, B., "Human Factors Engineering, Organisational and Social Issues, and Evaluation: The Three IMIA WGs Addressing the Success of Implementations of Health Information Applications - together with the IMIA WGs on Human Factors and on Human Factors Engineering, and on Technology Assessment and Quality Improvement - Co-organized and co-sponsored a panel for the AMIA 2007 Symposium - Bonnie Kaplan, Richard Schreiber, H. Dominic Covvey, Christopher D. Johnson, Theodore W. Marcy, "Workflow - The Grand, and Grander, Challenge" - together with AMIA WG on People and Organizational Issues
OUTREACH and COLLABORATIVE ACTIVITIES To raise awareness of organizational and social issues in health care, the chair and co-chair - contributed to E-Health Systems Diffusion and Use: The Innovation, the User and the USE IT Model, eds. R. W. Schuring and T. A. M. Spil, Idea Group Publishing, 2006. - served on the Program Committee and participated in the 2006 conference on "Pacific Rim e-Health Innovations," Kay Center for e-Health Research, Claremont Graduate University. - served on the Program Committee for the Information Technology in Health Care 2007 conference - organized a panel to include the chairs of IMIA WGs on Human Factors and on Human Factors Engineering, and on Technology Assessment and Quality Improvement: Kaplan, B., Elkin, P.L, Gorman, P, Koppel, R, Sites, F, Talmon, J., "Virtual Patients: Virtuality and Virtualization in Health Care, Proceedings of the IFIP 8.2 Conference on Virtuality and Virtualization, eds. K. Crowston, S. Sieber, and E. Wynn. New York: Springer, 2007, pp. (In press). - served on the Program Committee for the ACM conference on Supporting Group Work - presented an invited talk on Health Information Technologies: Opportunities and Challenges for the Pennsylvania Technical Assistance Program
ON-GOING ACTIVITIES - Nominate papers for the Diana Forsythe Award of the AMIA People and Organizational Issues WG, and serve on the Awards Committee. - Organize panels and tutorials at AMIA Symposia and Medinfo. - Develop curricula recommendations - Co-sponsor Information Technology in Health Care tri-annual conferences - Co-sponsor AMIA People & Organizational Issues WG Doctoral Symposium
